Choosing a 4G senior phone, check VoLTE too

A 4G label alone is not enough. Check 4G calling, your SIM and network provider before ordering.

When choosing a 4G senior phone, check more than the product name. It must support calls over 4G with your provider, known as VoLTE. The phone version, SIM and settings must work together.

This matters when replacing an older phone or buying for a parent. Connecting to an older network today does not by itself establish suitability for future use.

4G and VoLTE

4G describes a mobile network. VoLTE means making calls over it. A 4G label or symbol alone does not prove a particular phone supports 4G calls with your provider. KPN also makes this distinction in its replacement guidance. Ask specifically whether the supplied version supports 4G calling with your provider.

Why phone versions matter

Large buttons are only part of choosing a phone. Network compatibility determines whether calls work. Models may have several versions, so the name alone is insufficient. Do not mix specifications from different shops: photos, names and manuals can describe another version. Ask about the actual phone supplied.

Older networks are being phased out

Our Dutch source states that KPN's 2G network closes by 1 December 2027, with some customers affected earlier. This refers to KPN in the Netherlands, not Irish providers. Other countries and providers have their own schedules. Always check current information with your own provider.

Do not lock a phone to 2G to save battery without checking which mode is needed for reliable calls. Settings that worked on another phone may not suit this combination.

Information to check

  • Exact model and version.
  • Country of use.
  • Network provider, including prepaid.
  • Required SIM size.
  • Whether the SIM is active and supports 4G calls.
  • Required 4G calling settings.

A SIM working in another phone is useful information, but does not prove VoLTE works on the new one. Check the complete combination.

Test before everyday use

Call an agreed contact using the intended SIM and have them call back. Check sound in both directions. Ask your provider how to verify 4G calling for this exact combination. A successful call on an older network does not prove VoLTE. Then set up and test SOS separately if used.

Phones to compare

See the G6, F30 and A400. Check the supplied version and provider before ordering. For CS188, ask explicitly which network version is supplied. Send us your model preference, country and provider or compare G6 and F30 controls.
