Setting up a phone for your parent starts with practising together. Large buttons are useful, but the user must also know how to answer, dial and charge. Follow the manual for the supplied version and let your parent perform the steps.
Start with familiar tasks
Ask what worked on the previous phone and where help was needed. Is opening a flip phone familiar, or are directly visible buttons easier? Focus on this rather than enabling every feature. Let the user point to buttons, dial and read the screen, then adjust settings accordingly.
Check SIM and connection
- Check the SIM size in the manual.
- Insert it following the instructions.
- Check activation, subscription and credit.
- Agree how to enter and store the PIN safely.
- Make an outgoing call and have someone call back.
For a 4G phone, check 4G calls with the intended provider. A 4G label alone is not enough. Read our VoLTE guide.
Start with a short contact list
Save people your parent calls regularly with recognisable names. Let the user find and call a contact. Add more when this is familiar. Test speed dial separately: available buttons and setup vary. Only write instructions for steps tested on this phone.
Adjust sound and readability together
Have someone call while the phone is in its usual place. Can the ringtone be heard? Let your parent judge call volume during a call. Ringtone and call volume can be separate settings. Check available text-size and brightness options, change only what is needed and test in the usual location.
Set up SOS separately
Tell contacts they have been selected, agree how they respond and arrange a test. Practise stopping an accidental call. Never use emergency services for testing. Do not assume the button sends location or connects to an alarm centre. Follow our SOS checklist.
Give charging a regular place
Choose an accessible, visible spot. Let your parent connect the cable or place the phone in a suitable dock. Check the charging symbol together. Our G6 includes a dock. Keep the manual and short calling, answering and charging instructions nearby. Do not display PINs or other secrets on them.
Final checks
- The user can call a known contact.
- Incoming calls are recognised and answered.
- Calls are clearly audible.
- SOS contacts know the agreed response.
- The user can charge the phone.
- It is clear who helps with questions.
Review together after a few days. Compare phones or ask for advice.
